Do I need a referral to see a dietitian at Ausclin?
No referral is required to book an appointment with our Accredited Practising Dietitians & Nutritionists. However, if you have a GP Management Plan or specialist referral for Medicare rebates, please send any paperwork before your first consultation.
What are your fees and payment options?
Our fees reflect the expertise and quality of care we provide. Payment is required at the time of your appointment. You can pay via EFTPOS, credit/debit card, or through approved online payment methods for telehealth consultations. Please see our Fee Schedule for up-to-date pricing.
Are your services eligible for Medicare or private health rebates?
Yes! Many of our services can be claimed through Medicare with an appropriate referral (such as a Chronic Disease Management Plan or Eating Disorder Plan), and most private health insurers also provide rebates for dietetics. Check your policy or get in touch with us for more details.
What is the difference between a Dietitian and a Nutritionist?
In Australia, the main difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist lies in their qualifications and the scope of practice. Dietitians are nutrition professionals who have completed a recognised university degree in dietetics and extensive clinical training. They are qualified to provide individualised nutrition advice, develop medical nutrition therapy plans, and treat a range of health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, eating disorders, gastrointestinal issues, and more. Dietitians are regulated by Dietitians Australia and can use the title Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD), which is a recognised credential demonstrating expertise and ongoing professional development.
Nutritionists, on the other hand, is a more general term. In Australia, the title “nutritionist” is not regulated—meaning anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, even without formal qualifications. Some nutritionists may have a university degree, but others may only have completed short courses or no recognised training at all. Nutritionists primarily offer general healthy eating advice, nutrition education, and community programs, but are not qualified to provide individualised clinical care for medical conditions unless they have also completed accredited dietetics training.
Key Differences:
Dietitians can provide individual clinical nutrition care, work in hospitals and health care settings, and access Medicare rebates for eligible clients.
Nutritionists generally focus on community or population health and may not have the qualifications to offer personalised medical nutrition therapy.
Only professionals with the APD credential are recognised by Medicare, DVA, the NDIS, and private health insurers for clinical nutrition services.
When choosing a nutrition professional in Australia, look for the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) credential for peace of mind that you are in qualified and safe hands.
Is Ausclin an inclusive and trauma-informed practice?
Absolutely. We provide care that is inclusive, trauma-informed, and neuro-affirming. Our team welcomes people of all backgrounds, body sizes, genders, and life experiences, and strives to offer a safe, supportive space for every client.
Do you offer telehealth or online appointments?
Yes, we offer flexible telehealth consultations for clients throughout Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, the Hunter region, and beyond. This allows you to access professional nutrition advice from the comfort of home, with Medicare rebates and private health cover available for eligible clients.
What should I expect during my first appointment?
Your initial consultation will involve a comprehensive nutrition assessment. This includes reviewing your full medical history, current medications, recent pathology or blood test results, and a detailed dietary history. We will also take anthropometric measurements such as weight and body composition. Please bring any relevant documents, including medication lists, recent pathology reports, and health records, so we can tailor the nutrition plan specifically for you.
What is your cancellation policy?
We appreciate as much notice as possible if you need to reschedule. Cancellations within 24 hours or missed appointments may incur a fee. Please see our full cancellation policy here , or contact us for assistance.
Is my personal health information kept confidential?
Yes. Privacy and confidentiality are paramount at Ausclin. All client information is managed according to strict Australian privacy laws and only shared with your consent or as required by law.
