Why choline matters in pregnancy

Choline supports the healthy development of your baby’s brain and nervous system and plays a role in forming the neural tube. Requirements rise during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and because your body makes only small amounts, most of your choline needs to come from food. The Australian NHMRC sets an Adequate Intake of 440 mg per day in pregnancy, the target this calculator measures you against.

Good sources of choline

Some of the richest everyday sources include eggs (especially the yolk), lean meats and liver, fish such as salmon, soybeans and legumes, dairy, and vegetables like broccoli. Spreading these across your day makes reaching your target far easier than relying on any one food. For a plan tailored to you, our team offers preconception and pregnancy nutrition support, in clinic and via telehealth.

Easy ways to boost your choline

You don’t need liver every day to hit your target. A few simple, choline-rich meals spread across the day add up quickly, here are some everyday ideas to get you started.

  • Breakfast, veggie omelette: two whole eggs with spinach and mushrooms (~295 mg choline) covers most of a day’s pregnancy target on its own.
  • Lunch, salmon & greens bowl: cooked salmon with broccoli and a soft-boiled egg (~300 mg), with omega-3s for baby’s brain as a bonus.
  • Dinner, tofu or soybean stir-fry: a cup of edamame or soybeans (~105 mg) with chicken and vegetables is an easy, plant-forward top-up.
  • Simple snacks: a boiled egg, a glass of milk, or a handful of roasted soybeans each add a useful amount without much effort.

Frequently asked questions

How much choline do I need, and does it change in pregnancy?

Yes. Choline needs are higher at these life stages: the NHMRC Adequate Intake is 440 mg/day in pregnancy and 550 mg/day while breastfeeding. Choose your stage at the top of the calculator to measure yourself against the right target.

Which foods are highest in choline?

Eggs, liver and other lean meats, fish, soybeans and legumes, dairy and some vegetables. Eggs are one of the most practical sources, a single egg provides a meaningful share of the daily target. See the meal ideas above for easy ways to include more.

Does this calculator store my information?

No. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser. We don’t store, send or see your food selections or any personal or health information. Only anonymous, aggregate usage counts (with no identifying data) help us improve the tool.

Is this a substitute for advice from a dietitian?

No, it’s an educational estimate to help you understand your intake, not medical or diagnostic advice. For a plan tailored to you, book with one of our Accredited Practising Dietitians.

I’m not reaching my target, what should I do?

Small, consistent changes add up: an extra egg, a serve of fish, or adding legumes to a meal. If you’d like personalised support through pregnancy nutrition, our dietitians can help, including via telehealth.

Where do the values come from?

Food choline values are drawn from Australian and international food-composition data (FSANZ AUSNUT and USDA FoodData Central) and the pregnancy target from the NHMRC Nutrient Reference Values, reviewed by our Accredited Practising Dietitians.
