Estimate energy & protein requirements
A free clinical estimator from Ausclin’s Accredited Practising Dietitians. Enter sex, age, weight and activity level to estimate daily energy (Schofield BMR × activity) and protein needs, a handy reference for clinicians, students and curious clients.
This tool estimates daily energy requirements using the Schofield equation for basal metabolic rate multiplied by a physical activity level (PAL), plus protein needs per kilogram of body weight. It’s a clinical starting point, an estimate for adults, not a substitute for individual assessment by an Accredited Practising Dietitian.
How the estimate works
Schofield BMR uses your sex, age band and weight to estimate the energy your body uses at rest. Multiplying by a physical activity level (from sedentary ~1.2 to very active ~1.9) gives estimated total energy. Protein is estimated per kilogram, from maintenance (~0.75–0.84 g/kg) up to higher levels for repletion or increased needs. Results show in both kilojoules and kilocalories.

Estimated energy needs: — kcal/day (— kJ/day)
Estimated protein needs: — g/day
This is an estimate only, based on the Schofield equation and an activity multiplier, not an individualised assessment. An Accredited Practising Dietitian can tailor this to clinical status, body composition and goals. See booking below.

A reference, not a prescription
Real requirements shift with clinical status, body composition, illness and goals, which is exactly where a dietitian adds value. If you’re using this for a patient or your own planning, treat it as a ballpark and refer for tailored advice. Our team supports medical nutrition therapy across many conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Which equation does this use?
The Schofield equations for basal metabolic rate (by sex and age band), multiplied by a physical activity level (PAL). Energy is shown in kJ and kcal; protein is estimated per kg of body weight.
Is this suitable for children or pregnancy?
No, it’s built for non-pregnant adults (18+). Children, pregnancy and lactation have different requirements. Please seek individualised advice for those.
How accurate is it?
It’s a population-level estimate. Individual needs vary with body composition, health and activity, so use it as a reference and confirm with a dietitian for anything clinical. Get in touch.
Is my information private?
Yes, everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent or stored; only anonymous aggregate usage is recorded.
Can Ausclin help with clinical nutrition?
